Oil Paintings by Maxwell Street the end of an era Many Chicagoans remember Maxwell St. as one of America's best flea markets for more than one hundred years. And some Chicagoans think of it as a neighborhood and an important piece of Chicago's history where thousands of immigrant families have made their start as the new Americans. "Progress," in the form of gentrified development, is now in the process of erasing all this, as we move into the new millennium. Vanessa Shinmoto has captured the last few years of old Maxwell St. on canvas with oil paint, depicting the last remnants of a time that is lost forever. She uses bold colors to express the intense feelings nearby residents had regarding the razing of an entire neighborhood to build new condominiums. |
